Getting to Gwadar

New Gwadar International Airport is the nearest airport, about 21 km in a straight line from the centre of Gwadar. Arrivals usually continue into town by road, and the drive follows the coast into a city built around a hammerhead peninsula and a deep natural harbour.

Once in Gwadar, a road runs to the tip of the peninsula, where the harbour is visible on one side and the open sea on the other. The port area can be seen from the road, though access to it is limited. Starting early at the fish harbour and then driving to the tip of the hammerhead makes a straightforward way to see the city and its two bays.

Around Gwadar

Gwadar is a port city on the Makran coast of southern Balochistan, set on a hammerhead-shaped peninsula facing the Arabian Sea. The nearest place, Gwadar itself, sits at about 10 metres above sea level. The peninsula is rocky and dry, with low hills and a coastline that curves into two bays; the surrounding coast is arid, with rocky headlands and long beaches.

Fishing remains central to daily life, and the fish harbour is one of the busiest places in town. The old town clusters on the peninsula, dense and busy with shops, workshops and tea houses, while newer development spreads east along the coast. Birdlife is present along the shore, especially in winter.

Gwadar through the year

December is the best month to visit Gwadar, with January, February and November good as well. Winter is mild and clear, with sea breezes, and the shore birdlife is strongest then. March, April and October are possible months.

May through September falls in the off season. Summer brings strong winds and high humidity, so plans for the harbour and the tip of the peninsula are usually best made for the milder months.
