Photo: Khola Nasir / PexelsThe Lahore Museum stands on The Mall in Lahore, a short walk from the old city. Its most famous exhibit is the Zamzama, a large bronze cannon cast in the 18th century. The gun is displayed near the entrance, and it is one of the first things visitors see. The museum also holds Buddhist sculpture, miniature paintings and coins.
The museum building
The Lahore Museum was founded in 1865 and moved to its current building in 1894. The building is in the Indo-Saracenic style, with a red brick and stone facade. It stands on The Mall, the broad road that runs through the modern city. The museum is close to the old city and to the Lahore High Court.
The collection covers the history of the Punjab and beyond. Galleries are arranged by period and theme. There are sections on the Indus Valley Civilisation, Gandhara sculpture, Islamic art, and the Sikh and Mughal periods. Labels are in English and Urdu.
The museum is open daily except Friday. A fee is charged for entry. Photography is allowed in some galleries but not all. Check the notices at the entrance. The building has a garden and a library, and the main hall is often quiet in the morning.
The Zamzama gun
The Zamzama is a bronze cannon cast in Lahore in the 18th century. It is also known as Kim’s gun, after the novel by Rudyard Kipling. The gun is large and heavy, with a decorated barrel. It is displayed in the museum grounds, and visitors can walk around it.
The cannon was used in battles in the Punjab. It was later taken to Multan and then brought back to Lahore. The gun is one of the largest of its kind in the region. Its barrel has inscriptions and ornamentation that are still visible.
The Zamzama is a popular subject for photographs. It stands near the museum entrance, so it is easy to find. There is no barrier around it, but visitors should not climb on the gun. The museum staff can answer questions about its history.
