The route
The Makran Coastal Highway begins in Karachi and heads west along the coast. It passes through the districts of Lasbela, Gwadar and others. The road is mostly two-lane with a sealed surface. It runs close to the sea for much of its length, with desert on the inland side. The route crosses several seasonal rivers, including the Hingol.
The highway is part of the larger coastal network that links Karachi with Gwadar and continues to the Iranian border. The road was built to improve access to the Makran coast. It has reduced travel times between Karachi and Gwadar compared with the older inland route.
Distances between towns are long. Karachi to Kund Malir is about 160 kilometres. Ormara is a further 120 kilometres west. Pasni is about 130 kilometres beyond Ormara, and Gwadar is another 120 kilometres. These distances are approximate and depend on the exact starting point.
Hingol National Park
The highway passes through Hingol National Park, one of the largest national parks in Pakistan. The park covers desert, river valleys and coastal areas. The Hingol River flows through the park and reaches the sea near Kund Malir. The park is home to wildlife including ibex and crocodiles. Visitors can see rock formations and mud volcanoes in the area.
Stops along the way
Kund Malir is a beach where the Hingol River meets the Arabian Sea. The beach is wide and backed by low cliffs. Basic food stalls operate in season. The water is generally calm, but currents can be strong. The area is popular for a break from driving. There is no formal accommodation, but camping is possible with care.
Ormara is a fishing town with a natural harbour. The town has a few guest houses and restaurants. The beach is quiet and the water is clear. Fishing boats can be seen along the shore. Ormara is a good place to stop for the night and to buy fresh fish.
Pasni is another fishing town, known for its harbour and beach. The town has basic accommodation and food. The beach is wide and often empty. Pasni is a useful stop before the final drive to Gwadar.
Gwadar
Gwadar is a port city with more services than the smaller towns. It has hotels, restaurants and a market. The coastline near Gwadar includes beaches and rocky points. The city is the eastern end of the highway for many travellers. From Gwadar, the road continues west towards the Iranian border.
