Around Faisalabad
In Faisalabad, the city is a working one in Punjab, known for its textile mills, a grid of colonial-era streets and a busy bazaar at its centre. It sits on the flat, dusty plains of Punjab, roughly 130 km west of Lahore and 240 km north-east of Multan. The nearest named place, Faisalabad itself, stands at about 184 metres above sea level. Outside the centre the city spreads into a mix of industrial estates, residential colonies and farmland, and the newer areas to the south and west are more open, with wider roads and planned housing colonies.
Around Faisalabad, the clock tower is the obvious starting point. Built in 1903, it stands at the centre of the old city, and the eight bazaars that radiate from it are each known for a particular trade, such as cloth, jewellery or food. The grid plan around the clock tower is a legacy of that early period. The area is busy throughout the day and is best explored on foot, though traffic is heavy. One day is enough to see the main sights.
